Tour Overview

The Sierra Nevada towers over southern Spain. Much of this dramatic landscape is a protected biosphere reserve, rich in wildlife and home to many endemic plant species. Here, and in the neighbouring Alpujarra region, we are rewarded with some of the finest walking in Andalucía; from ancient chestnut forests to lavender and broom-clad moorland and whitewashed Moorish villages. A night in the city of Granada, home to the magnificent Alhambra palace, is the perfect end to the week.

This trip includes a few of our Citizen Science Departures. These special departures offer you the opportunity to be involved in the collection of freshwater samples during the trip. The environmental DNA information derived from this sample will contribute directly to the eBioAtlas; the world’s largest repository of flora and fauna species data, contributing to the conservation and restoration of biodiversity both locally and globally. To book onto one of these special departures, see the Dates & Prices tab. For more information on these departures and the eBioAtlas, click here.

The route takes us through several traditional towns and villages, such as Lobras and Timar. Lunch is taken in a family-run tapas bar, where we will be offered a selection of local dishes, as available on the day (lunch is paid for locally). In the afternoon, we walk to Cadiar and back to the hotel via the GR7 long-distance path through the villages of Narila and Alcútar.

This is an amazingly scenic walk with opportunities to see ibex and birds of prey. We encounter points of historical and folkloric interest, plus paddling possibilities at the river crossing.

Accommodation

On this walking adventure in Spain, we mostly stay at a family-run hotel in Berchules. Our final night is spent in Granada, at a three-star city centre hotel. Below are the properties we typically use:

Berchules: Hotel Los Berchules (nights 1-6)

Our time in the rural village of Berchules is spent at this welcoming 14-room hotel. It has a swimming pool (open seasonally, usually June to September) in the garden and there's a lounge-bar with a fireplace. The 35-seat dining room serves regional cuisine and there's a selection of local and Spanish wines to work through.

Granada: Hotel Dauro 2 (night 7)

On the last night, we normally stay in this three-star hotel in Granada old town, a 15-minute walk from the Alhambra. It has a bar specialising in wine, meats and tapas, plus a meditation room for relaxation and a quiet moment to reflect on the trip.

Worth knowing

In Berchules, single rooms are available at no charge (subject to availability) – these rooms are small and basic, without a view, but have private bathrooms. Single rooms are limited at Hotel Dauro 2 but can be requested at the time of booking for a supplement.

Reviews from travellers on this tour

Top Autumn Walking

There is a lot of enjoyable walking to be had on this trip, varied routes and tantalising views of big ridges and high peaks. There is also wildlife a plenty but it does need looking hard for. There are some steep ups and downs in places but the paths are considerably better than I had expected and are all very 'doable' if you have a reasonable level of fitness. The hotel in Berchules is a comfortable and very friendly base to operate from, Wendy and her staff couldn't do enough to help and they serve up some appetising food too; tThe packed lunches are perhaps the best I have had anywhere. If you have an interest in avaiation history ask Wendy about the Royal Air Force Asscoiation plaque that is on the bar! Granada is a complete and very enjoyable contrast, a city with a really nice 'feel' to it. A different but decent hotel. The Alhambra really is a must - it would be a shame to not see it if you are in the city.

Excellent walking

A good variety of walks out from a lovely small hotel run by very friendly people. The food was excellent, the lunch bags superb, the wine and beer very enjoyable.

Sierra Nevada and Granada

A fantastic week of varied walking in sunny Andalucìa! Great hosts, great tour leader, great fellow company. I would highly recommend this trip!

Sierra nevada and Grenada

A lovely week of walking in Las Alpujarras through pretty white villages, woodland trails, hillsides covered with wild lavender and thyme. As it was in early October there was also the added bonus of picking walnuts, almonds and ripe figs from the trees. The group was lovely and each day ended with a well earned beer in a local bar. We were made to feel very welcome in the hotel - the food was always excellent and the staff went out of their way to make sure we were comfortable. And last but not least Sami the dog made an excellent member of the walking group.

SIERRA NEVADA & GRANADA

An excellent introduction to walking in Spain.  A comfortable hotel and breathtaking scenery topped by an opportunity to visit the Alhambra Palace on the final day.

Great time

Stars aligned for this trip, Outstanding Lead, Landscape, hosts and crew. Our guide Dan, had a bit of style and swagger. instilled confidence in all the group making all the walks of Sierra Nevada a stroll in the park. Hotel Los Berchurles a welcome retreat full of charactor and warmth. Wendy, Shelia, Alejandro and Omar, all served us well. Our fellow guests was the final part in the alignment and it was great to share anniversaries, quizs, horse wrestling with them all.

Beautiful Alpujarra

Wonderful opportunity to enjoy the more rural side of Spain - stunning scenery, friendly & hospitable accommodation and lovely walking.

SIERRA NEVADA & GRANADA

Stunning scenery, wonderful, informative guide and excellent family run hotel.Well organised giving a trouble free holiday.

WHITE VILLAGES OF SIERRA NEVADA

I had never been to Spain before and my first impression was that I wouldn't enjoy my week as the area was hot, barren and dry.  By the end of the week I couldn't wait to go back and I am now contemplating living in the area for a year to get to know it better.

SIERRA NEVADA & GRANADA

Lovely walking, friendly hotel, good food and great weather - what more can you want from a holiday?
