Ingolfur Arnarson, the first settler of Iceland, built his farm on the peninsula where Reykjavík stands today. The town earned its name “Smokey Bay” after columns of steam rose from the hot springs and made a deep impression on the first settlers. Reykjavik offers a wide range of restaurants and coffee houses, making dinner a great way to get better acquainted with Icelands capital.

Day 3: The Golden Circle & South Coast (B/-/-)
Location: Golden Circle
Accommodation Name: Hotel in Vik
Meals Included: Breakfast
Begin your day with breakfast at your hotel, then meet your guide at reception. The adventure kicks off with a pick-up from your accommodation or a nearby spot in Reykjavík. First on the agenda are the three iconic attractions of the Golden Circle. Þingvellir National Park holds a special place in Icelandic hearts, hosting the world's oldest ongoing parliament since 930 CE/AD. Recognized by UNESCO for its historical, geological, and cultural significance, Þingvellir boasts Þingvallavatn and the Silfra fissure, bridging the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates. Next, explore the geothermal wonders of the Geysir hot spring area. While the Great Geysir lies dormant, nearby Strokkur erupts spectacularly every 5 to 10 minutes. Conclude the Golden Circle with a visit to Gullfoss waterfall, where the mighty cascade plunges 32 meters into a rugged canyon. Embark on a scenic drive along the enchanting South Coast, pausing first at Seljalandsfoss Waterfall. Experience its awe-inspiring power up close by walking behind its gracefully falling curtain. Continue to Skógafoss waterfall, where water crashes over ancient sea cliffs, often forming dazzling rainbows in the spray.
Overnight in Vik
Day 4: Vík - Skaftafell - Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon (B/-/-)
Location: Vatnajökull National Park
Accommodation Name: Hotel in Hof
Meals Included: Breakfast
Following breakfast, your journey continues along the south coast towards Skaftafell and Vatnajökull National Park. Spanning 13,600 km², this protected wilderness harbors Vatnajökull glacier, Iceland's highest peak Hvannadalshnúkur, Skaftafell, and the breathtaking Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon among its many natural wonders. This tour covers all three of Iceland's national parks: Þingvellir, Vatnajökull, and Snæfellsjökull. At Skaftafell, embark on a glacier hike guided by certified glacier experts. Equipped with crampons and necessary gear, explore the unique landscape of Vatnajökull's outlet glaciers, featuring crevasses, moulins descending to the glacier's base, and stunning vistas. Our guides are eager to share their knowledge, so feel free to ask questions! From October to April, swap the glacier hike for an adventure through Vatnajökull's crystal ice caves, formed annually by freezing glacier meltwater. After your invigorating glacier experience, our comfortable minibus transports you to Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon for more glacial marvels. As you approach, witness a procession of icebergs drifting gracefully in the lake, often towering and uniquely shaped after breaking from the retreating Breiðamerkurjökull glacier. Keep an eye out for seals frolicking among these stunning ice sculptures. Did you know? This magical setting has been featured in several James Bond films and other movies, lending it a cinematic allure.

Day 5: East Fjords - Djúpivogur - Wilderness Center (B/-/-)
Location: Egilsstaðir
Accommodation Name: Hotel in Egilsstaðir
Meals Included: Breakfast
After breakfast, You leave the Vatnajökull National Park area behind, but the sensational scenery continues! Follow the twisting and turning roads, flanked by the coast on one side and majestic mountain peaks on the other, through the East Fjords to Egilsstaðir. This picturesque town on the banks of the Lagarfljót River is home to the legend of Largarfljótasormurinn, the Largarfljót worm. Tales of the giant Largarfljót worm, which is said to reside in the lake and show itself from time to time, are firmly established within Icelandic folklore tales. Continue your journey to Djúpivogur, a small and remote fishing village. Let the North Atlantic waves wash over the black sandy beach, where a rich birdlife thrives. Most Icelandic birds live and nest around the area during the summer months. Locals like to joke that there are probably more birds here than people. Djúpivogur is home to just over 1100 people, known for their welcoming community and strong commitment to eco issues.
Later, head to an interactive historical center where you can enjoy outdoor activities like hiking, biking, and horse riding. Nestled between Europe's largest glacier, Vatnajökull, and Lake Lagarfljót, the Wilderness Center provides an authentic Icelandic experience. Explore exhibits showcasing life in the rugged highlands with free admission to the museum during your stay. Cross an old wooden bridge upon arrival to step into history, and relax after your adventures in the hot spring spa, enjoying meals prepared with local ingredients. Your accommodation for the night awaits in the picturesque area of Egilsstaðir, ideal for scouting out the Northern Lights in winter

Formed by the collapse of a giant lava tube, some natural formations may remind you of familiar shapes, like The Church (Kirkjan). Continue around picturesque Lake Mývatn towards Akureyri, stopping at the stunningly beautiful Goðafoss Waterfall, known as the "Waterfall of the Gods." This horseshoe-shaped waterfall holds a special story from 1000 AD, symbolizing the end of pagan worship. Explore bubbling mud pots, unique lava formations, and optional relaxation at Mývatn Nature Baths, the "Blue Lagoon of the North," with its mineral-rich geothermal waters. Today, our journey centers around Borgarfjörður in West Iceland, a region lauded as one of Lonely Planet's top travel destinations in 2016. Begin with a stop at Grábrók, a volcanic crater. Take a brief hike to its summit for breathtaking views over lava fields and vast landscapes stretching into the distance. Next, experience the contrasting marvels of Deildartunguhver hot spring, Europe's most powerful, supplying much of the area's hot water. Visit Hraunfossar waterfall, where icy water emerges from lava in thousands of streams, creating a sprawling and picturesque cascade. Then, explore Barnafoss, aptly named 'Children's Falls,' and hear the legend from your guide.
Conclude your day at Reykholt, a significant site in Icelandic history, particularly during medieval times. See Snorralaug, the hot spring pool named after Snorri Sturluson, the 12th/early-13th-century scholar, lawyer, historian, and saga writer. Stand where Snorri is said to have bathed and reflect on the rich tapestry of Icelandic history. Pause at the picturesque seaside village of Arnarstapi to visit the natural Miðgjá rock arch and the historic Búðakirkja church from the 19th century. Enjoy lunch in the village of Hellnar (meal not included) before venturing into Snæfellsnes National Park. Wander through moss-covered lava fields and gaze upon the majestic Snæfellsjökull Glacier, immortalized in Jules Verne's novel "Journey to the Center of the Earth" as the gateway to the underworld. Continue to the stunning black pebble beach at Djúpalónssandur, framed by uniquely shaped cliffs. Explore the beach and test your strength with the 'lifting stones,' once used by fishermen to prove their prowess. Witness the wild beauty of this coastline, marked by the wreckage of the British Trawler Epine, a testament to its treacherous nature. On your return journey to Reykjavík, marvel at legendary landscapes and make a final stop at Kirkjufell, often dubbed Iceland's most photographed mountain. In the evening, after a week of breathtaking sights and thrilling adventures, we'll drop you off in Reykjavík.
