Lucerne
To make the most of the day we depart early and take the short drive to Lucerne, often considered Switzerland’s most beautiful city, spectacularly situated among stunning mountain views.
It has been attracting well-heeled visitors for two centuries, including our very own Queen Victoria. Highly recommended is an invigorating stroll along the Chapel Bridge, a unique covered wooden walkway crossing the lake, supported by stilts and lined with colourful flower-filled window boxes. Not only is it the city’s most iconic structure, it’s a superb way to absorb Lucerne’s regal atmosphere, before we continue our exploration of the best of Switzerland.
Bernese Oberland
As you enter the Bernese Oberland in central Switzerland, the views become quite literally breath-taking! This is the grand alpine heart of Europe with some of the finest mountain scenery on earth, described by the composer Mendelssohn as ‘the most wonderful of all in this unbelievably beautiful country’.
On viewing the legendary snow-capped peaks of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau you’ll be quite simply awestruck. We then ascend by mountain railway for more extraordinary vistas, with the crystal-clear lakes reflecting the meadows and forests below. This truly magical landscape is sure to enchant you.
Later we’ll descend again by mountain railway before returning to the ship. Please note, temperatures will be significantly lower at altitude, even during the summer months, so it’s advisable to pack suitable clothing. Lunch is not included on this full day excursion; however, the ship will offer a packed lunch.
If you chose a more leisurely start to the day, we drive to Lucerne.

Enjoy a more comprehensive excursion in Lucerne, with a guided tour of the city. Then spend time at leisure wandering its medieval streets before returning to the ship for lunch.

Look out for the Baroque spires of St. Peter Abbey as we drive through the quaint village and stop for a photo of the incredible countryside surrounding St Märgen, on our way to Freiburg. On arrival, we'll follow a local guide around some of the city's sights - including the Münsterplatz and the historic Kaufhaus - before time at leisure to explore independently.
Alsace wine route
Travelling, between the vineyards and mountains, along the Wine Route we make our way to Ribeauvillé - a charming village that lies in the shadow of the majestic ruins of the Three Castles of the Lords of Ribeaupierre. After a short walking tour, there's time to wander its picturesque streets to admire the 15th- to 18th-century buildings and Renaissance squares.
Leaving Ribeauvillé, we head next to Riquewihr. Named the 'Most Beautiful Village in France', this medieval town lies right in the heart of the Alsatian vineyards. Famous for both its architecture and its wine, there's plenty to see during our walking tour. There's a little free time to explore before heading back to the ship.
As the sun sets and the riverside lights begin to twinkle, enjoy the views through the restaurant’s panoramic windows during tonight's excellent dinner. This afternoon we witness a real highlight of the cruise, the dramatic Rhine Gorge: steep vineyards give way to almost vertical rocky outcrops, towering above the sweeping valley sides. Sailing past Saint Goar and the many ruined castles, you get a real sense of the myths of this historic river coming alive around you. No legend is more famous than that surrounding the Loreley Rock, where beautiful nymphs distracted hapless sailors, luring them to their deaths in the treacherous waters.

Location: Heidelberg

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Heidelberg or Schwetzingen
This morning you have a choice of activities, the first is a visit to the refined city of Heidelberg. An architectural treasure, escaping damage during the Second World War, this beautifully preserved city straddles the banks of the river Neckar, against an idyllic backdrop of thickly forested slopes. Its 14th-century university is one of Europe’s most prestigious, and reminiscent of its ‘twin’ – Cambridge. During the 19th century it was the centre of Germany’s Romantic Movement, on the route of the Grand Tour and visited by many artists including JMW Turner who captured its splendours for eternity. On our guided walking tour you’ll discover the main attractions, including the magical stone bridge with its twin white towers, its imposing castle that stands guard over its romantic old town, and there’ll also be some free time to explore yourself.
Alternatively, visit Schwetzingen Palace to enjoy a tour of its superb grounds and its grand 18th century rooms. Built on the site of a former castle, dating back to 1350, the palace reached the height of its splendour under the Prince Elector Carl Theodor during the 18th century, who instructed the most notable landscape gardeners of the time to create the exquisite gardens, the design of which survives today. A baroque masterpiece, stroll the painstakingly tended paths and leafy avenues, admiring the vibrant blooms from far and wide and a host of eye-catching sculptures. An assortment of whimsical buildings – a small Temple of Apollo, a Bathhouse in the style of an Italian villa and the Turkish Garden’s Mosque with its intricate oriental decoration - lend an exotic touch. The 18th-century English-style park is one of the earliest of its kind in Germany and it’s a joy to amble around the lake, with the many tree species mirrored in its tranquil water.
Schwetzingen Palace is famous for its beautiful gardens, but its interior rooms are just as impressive. They feature a combination of Baroque and Rococo styles, blending functionality with elegance. Many of the rooms still maintain their historic grandeur, making the palace a remarkable example of European royal architecture and design from the 18th century.

Day 17
Location: Bonn
Accommodation Name: MS Emily Brontë
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Bonn
This morning enjoy free time to explore Bonn at your own pace. This historic city served as the capital of the West German state from 1949-1990 until the reunification of Germany which restored Berlin as the country’s capital. Whilst it lost the battle to retain the parliament, Bonn still holds the status of a secondary governmental seat, so many government ministries and public bodies still have their headquarters here. But behind its official façade lies a historic and fascinating city which you’ll discover as you wander its old town, centred around two grand squares fringed by the pastel pink town hall with its gleaming gilding. The soaring spire of the imposing Romanesque church is the city’s landmark, and the great classical composer Ludwig van Beethoven was also born here. You can visit his home – now a museum detailing the life and work of this musical genius, one of the greatest composers of all time.
Cologne
As lunch is served on board, we set sail once more and it’s not long until Cologne’s skyline appears on the horizon. Head up on deck to watch our final approach into this most majestic of cities, where you will have a choice of guided tours.
You can choose a guided tour of Cologne’s old town, where a local guide will bring the city’s fascinating history to life. Explore the vibrant old town with its maze of cobbled streets, featuring beautifully restored buildings, excellent shopping opportunities, and cosy bars, some of which still brew their own beer. The spire of the Great St. Martin Church has pierced the skyline of the old town since the Middle Ages, while the historic City Hall is recognised as the oldest town hall in Germany.
Alternatively, you can choose a tour of the cathedral instead with an expert guide. The largest Gothic church in Northern Europe was a miraculous survivor of Second World War bombing and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It took six centuries to complete this iconic masterpiece and among its many treasures are the magnificent stained-glass windows and gilded sarcophagus said to contain the remains of the three kings from the Nativity story. Please note that capacity for this tour is limited, and it is not available on religious holidays.
After some free time, we’ll return to the ship for our final dinner. Afterwards retire to the lounge to enjoy professional musicians from leading symphony orchestras demonstrating perfect mastery of their instruments, showcasing melodies from the most famous European composers with a special focus on Beethoven, who was born in Bonn - a splendid finale to this memorable holiday.
Included experiences:
Visit to Bonn
Afternoon option 1: guided tour of Cologne’s Old Town
Afternoon option 2: guided tour of Cologne Cathedral
Classical duo musical performance on board

Beethoven tour with visit to Beethoven House
Duration: 3hrs
Bonn is the birthplace of Ludwig van Beethoven, so we'll explore all the sights of the iconic composer. Born in December 1770, Beethoven lived in Bonn until 1792, before he moved to Vienna, where he became one of the world’s most famous composers. You'll see places and locations where the composer worked and gain fascinating insights into his everyday life.
We'll visit Beethoven House, a museum that offers a fascinating glimpse into his life, and after an introduction by the guide, you are free to explore. Housing a collection of artifacts, manuscripts, and personal belongings it impressively highlights his early life and creative genius. As you explore the various rooms, you can learn about his struggles with deafness, his musical innovations, and his deep passion for art.
This optional tour can be done instead of free time in Bonn.
Please contact us at least two weeks before you’re set to depart to add the above experience to your booking before departure. Minimum numbers apply.

Ship Details
MS Emily Bronte
Ship Overview
It is extremely difficult to convey just how extraordinary this outstanding ship really is and exactly what distinguishes the MS Emily Bronte from similar vessels.
It would be very easy to simply describe the MS Emily Bronte as ‘luxurious’ but it’s much more than that; we have deliberately avoided the current trend for a minimalist style where you could be anywhere in the world, creating instead a unique yet exquisite blend of understated taste, style and elegance at the highest level. Immediately striking is just how exceptionally spacious this vessel is as you enter a gleaming, richly coloured marble-floored lobby flooded with natural light from a stunning atrium above. Moving inside, exceptional creativity from Europe’s finest design studio has produced a superbly balanced masterpiece of onboard style, utilising sustainable rich hardwoods, gleaming brass and polished copper, sparkling glass and intricate wrought iron. The ship is beautifully illuminated throughout – including the exterior and imaginatively furnished with harmonious colour schemes, all designed to create the serene atmosphere reflective of the golden age of cruising which time after time you tell us you adore.

As a travel company that curates holidays across the globe, we’re acutely aware of how important it is to look after the world we live and travel in.We see the impact that travel can have when it’s used as a force for good to give back the destinations we visit. It’s essential to protect the world we love exploring for future generations to enjoy. As the UK’s leading curated tour and river cruise operator, we have an important role to play. We have an ethical obligation to ensure the way we work is based around a solid Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) strategy (excuse the jargon! We prefer to call it 'Doing The Right Thing') and we’re also in a privileged position to be able to influence our partners and suppliers to ensure our efforts aren’t just surface level.Responsible Travel has become increasingly important to both Riviera Travel’s guests and staff, but we absolutely want to avoid greenwashing – the act of making it seem like a company is being sustainable and ethical to attract eco-conscious travellers – and do something that’s genuinely impactful and meaningful. This is one of our guiding principles. The other fundamental principle is that we don’t want to compromise Riviera Travel guests experience. Your enjoyment of your holiday is our top priority, so we’ve put a lot of time and effort into creating four Responsible Travel Pillars that considers both our guests’ experiences and our impact on the planet. Our Responsible Travel PillarsSustainabilityOur goal: Halve our business use of paper and plasticsOur ambition is to reduce our paper and plastics usage by 50% by 2025 by better using technology to allow us to rely less on printed materials, developing an enhanced digital brochure, and replacing plastic luggage tags with quality reusable tags.Operating EthicallyOur goal: Setting high standards for ourselves and our suppliersWe're rolling out a Supplier Ethics Policy which sets out our minimum standards of how our partners should conduct themselves, as well as a Hotel Sustainability Checklist, to gauge the sustainability efforts of our hotel partners.Carbon FootprintOur goal: Reduce our carbon footprint by 20% within 5 yearsWorking with eCollective, our ambition is to reduce our carbon footprint by 20% by 2028 - including customer travel and within our business - by setting short- and long-term goals both at our office and on our holidays.CharityOur goal: Make a meaningful contribution to a charity we believe inWe will be supporting our new charity partner Practical Action with £1 donated for every guest who travels with us, and also offering our customers the opportunity to round up their booking to give an additional donation if they wish.
